Brilliance and autism—a reframe
3 min read
I think there's a fundamental human truth that gets completely lost in the way most societies function...
That every single human being has brilliance within them.
That brilliance is not something only a tiny sliver of humans are born with.
And the only reason this truth is not immediately apparent...
Is that there are millions of different barriers to brilliance...
Many of which are actively embedded into the fabric of society with the explicit goal of LIMITING ACCESS to brilliance.
Which keeps the people in power, in power.
And all we have to do to dismantle that (which we ABSOLUTELY have the power and ability to do if enough of us join in the effort)...
Is create PATHWAYS TO BRILLIANCE by removing BARRIERS TO ACCESS.
What that means for autistic people...
Is giving them (the *right* kind of) support.
Saying this another way…
Everyone is brilliant. Not everyone has access to their brilliance.
Autism creates barriers to access. Not less brilliance.
Autistic people need support to remove those barriers.
The RIGHT KIND of support, which doesn’t center survival.
Instead, it centers giving autistic people access to the things that make them happy and fulfilled... this includes access to things like brilliance.
