Not all autistic people consider themselves disabled—and that is ok
Suggesting that an autistic person who doesn't feel disabled by their autism can only feel that way because of "internalized ableism" is dehumanizing.
I don't know why this is such a pervasive and casual sentiment in online autistic spaces.
If an autistic person has all of their needs met, it makes complete and logical sense that they would not feel disabled by their autism.
Even if it's possible for circumstances to change out of nowhere so their needs become unmet... therefore making them feel disabled.
It is possible that an autistic person who has found a way to get all of their needs met on a regular basis will not feel disabled by their autism.
(Of course, not all autistic people will necessarily feel this way, but it is absolutely logical and understandable that some might.)
To be clear, the existence of this specific autistic experience does not change the fact that autism should remain designated a disability both medically and legally.
But telling an autistic person that they are either misdiagnosed (aka can't possibly be autistic) or that they don't feel disabled by their autism only because of internalized ableism... is dehumanizing.
No one should be doing this.
