Autism and complex PTSD (cPTSD)

2 min read

Autism is living in a constant state of cPTSD due to literal years of daily micro traumas that even the most self aware autistic person can't strategize around.

For those who don’t know, cPTSD is complex trauma that results from many, repeated traumatic experiences over time.

These experiences can be big, but are often (seemingly) small.

The main thing is that they happen consistently, which causes the trauma to compound (and increase) over time.

Now, here's how autism relates to all of this...

Our brains often react to things that trigger us as though they are traumatic events.

This is backed by a study published last year, which found evidence that "mild" stressors can lead to PTSD-like responses in autistic brains. (Link to the study below)

So, though autism ITSELF isn't cPTSD... it can, and often does, LEAD to it for many of us.
