Why internalized autism is not just another term for masking

Internalized autism is hiding your autistic traits (masking) for self protection, but it causing such intense and extreme inner turmoil that it leads to dangerous and life-threatening ramifications. 


Here are some more thoughts I have about Internalized autism, at least how I’m currently thinking about it… 


- Internalized autism is not the same as masking, but it is certainly the result of it. 


- Internalized autism is not the same as anxiety either, though it can often lead to it.

 

- Internalized autism can be, but is not necessarily intentional. 


- Internalized autism is turning our autistic traits inward rather than recognizing and accommodating them… and the detrimental impact that internalization has on us, physically, mentally, and emotionally.
