Autism and allergies

2 min read

Allergies are not necessarily tied to autism (plenty of people have allergies and aren’t autistic) but according to research, there is a notable correlation.

Here’s a transcript from a study (which I’ll link to below) that breaks down the results found…

Overall analysis of IgE sensitization to common allergens showed a higher frequency in ASD children (65.6% ASD versus 28.9% control, P = 0.002).

Also, sensitization to house dust allergens (D1, D2 and I6) and to food allergens of FP5 panel (F1, F2, F4, F13 and F210) was more common in children with ASD (46.87% vs 21.05% and 37.5% vs. 13.16%, respectively, P < 0.05).

The most common sensitizing respiratory allergens were D1 and D2 mites in both populations. For eating allergens, egg white was the only allergen sensitizing in children with ASD.
